more than a few of my favorite alexa outfits…

oh boy!

boys just have better clothes. they have things like real pockets and longer shirts. i really like to dress like a boy. one of my favorite outfits to wear is denim on denim with oxfords, everyone needs a little tomboy in their style. loose-fit jeans, button downs, flannels, suits, loafers, oxfords and blazers aren't just for the boys.

the key to menswear for women is fit. you're still a woman, so you don't dress in totally shapeless clothes straight off the men's rack. pair loose tops with a fitted pant and boyfriend jeans with a more fitted or tailored top. if you're brave enough to wear a suit you have to make sure its perfectly fitted or tailored. find a suit where the trouser is a cigarette pant fit stopping at the ankle and the jacket is tailored to a woman's shape because some women's suits try too hard to look like a man's suit. my favorite men's looks to draw inspiration from are from the 50s and 60s of course, bob dylan in particular.

8.17.2014

a year ago, i was getting ready to move to california to start a new chapter in my life: my first year of college far away from my family and friends. this year, while everyone else is moving back to school, i am not. i decided to not go back to azusa pacific. the reason is simple, i wasn't and couldn't be happy there, apu isn't the right school for me and it was time that i out my own feelings first and made my own choices. it was a difficult choice, but i decided that i needed to be good to myself and not go back to that school. the reasons i chose the school in the first place weren't the right reasons you should choose a school. being honest with myself and you, i didn't pick apu for the right reasons. i chose it to make other people happy and hopefully proud of me and being even more brutally honest, i went there for in n out, beaches and basically as a "screw you" to everyone who thought i couldn't take it. well, people were proud of me and happy for me and i survived just fine, but i wasn't happy at the end and i knew it wasn't the place for me to stay.

when i told people that i decided not to go back to apu, they mostly assumed that it was because i was homesick and california was too far away or that school was just too hard for little me. like i said before, i just couldn't be happy there and that's why i'm not going back along with the fact that it isn't the right place for my career goals.

assumed reason one: i was too far away from home.

i wasn't homesick. not at all. sure i missed iowa and my family, but i was fine. i mostly missed the rain and cold weather (most people wondered why i moved there in the first place with my love for nasty weather). i could pretty much be fine in romania. maybe i'll go there if they have gloomy weather. distance doesn't bother me. i like being by myself and self-sufficient. i didn't call home every week crying because i missed my home so much, i called home out of jealousy when they were getting rain while it was like 10,000 degrees and when people didn't have to go to school for snow days. i wasn't too far away from home, sometimes it felt like i wasn't far enough (no offense friends and family i love you all).

assumed reason two: school was too hard and i couldn't keep up.

i did just fine in school. in fact i did better than i did throughout most of high school. excluding bible, but i've always been awful at bible class. yes, there were times where i was stressed got behind, but it wasn't too hard for little me and caught up every time. there were classes in high school that were harder than some of my classes at college. i didn't fail school, i did alright.

real reason one: i wasn't and couldn't be happy.

my very close friends know the details of the reasons i couldn't be happy there and they're the people who i think deserve to know those reasons. i gave the school a go and tried my hardest to be happy there, but i just couldn't. it wasn't the right school for me. i know that if i stayed there, i wouldn't be very happy with me.

real reason two: apu isn't the right place for my career path and goals.

i went into apu desiring to become a high school history teacher, but things have changed. i no longer want to teach history and a school like apu is too conservative for me to learn what i need to learn in order to fulfill my need career goals. after thinking through what i really like and what i'm really passionate about, i decided that i want to study journalism and get into fashion journalism more specifically (you know me and my love for clothing and telling people what in fashion is atrocious). i realized that to get the most for my money and education, i needed to study journalism in a school with a better liberal arts focus and a school that's a little less religious because honestly you have a better chance at some jobs when your education didn't come from a christian school.

what's next? well, at this very moment i'm not sure. i've applied to two schools but can't really move forward until i've tied up the loose ends at apu and that means wretched paperwork and receiving transcripts. what i do know, is that i've found schools where i could be happy and i could feel like i fit in better as well as getting a better education in what i want to do. i needed to find a place practical to what i want do. in the end, i'd love more than anything to write for glamour uk or elle uk. i mean when people ask me what my goals are i sometimes sarcastically answer alexa chung, but i of course have to finish school first (maybe…)before i can have my own nail polish and eyeliner.

i did really appreciate my time in california and i met very beautiful people on the inside and out that i hope i can still talk to and possibly visit because i never did go to disneyland. until next time california! (which i hope will be soon because i'm serious about this disneyland thing. i lived there almost an entire year and never went and i hear miraculous and glamorous things about their churros and churros happen to be my fourth favorite food.)

cheese tart...

8.01.2014

i love to bake, and tonight i decided that i would bake a lemon-ricotta tart recipe courtesy of my favorite blog, bleubird. james on bleubird added blueberries to the basic martha stewart cheese tart recipe. i often don't eat what i bake, but i did eat this! the tart itself isn't sweet, but the berries add the right amount of sweetness. i like that the tart isn't sickening sweet. next time i make it, i think i'll try it with raspberries (i added some to my own slice :) ).

supplies:
1 box of vanilla wafer cookies (12 ounce box)
7 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
2 cups ricotta cheese
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons grated lemon zest (it took me three lemons)
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 carton of fresh blueberries or raspberries

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Using a food processor, pulse the vanilla wafers until they are finely ground. Add in the melted butter and continue to pulse until everything comes together and the crumbs are moist.
Pour the crumb mixture into a 9-inch tart pan . I used a springform pan inside of a tart pan. Press the mixture into the pan and up the sides, making sure to press firmly so the crust holds together. Place the pan on a baking sheet, or inside a tart pan or pie dish and  bake for 10-12 minutes or until crust is lightly golden. Remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack.
In a clean food processor, blend the ricotta, softened cream cheese, eggs, granulated sugar, lemon zest, and juice until combined and smooth. Pour the ricotta mixture into the crust and bake until the filling is set (no longer jiggly) and slightly browned in some spots. Approx. 30-35 minutes.
Let your tart cool, then top it with the berries and voila!
