mad men the morning after: my favorite mad men quotes

5.18.2015

i used to avoid going to bed in the 6th grade by sitting on my parents floor watching mad men. that started my nine year affair with madmen, my extreme love/hate relationship with don draper and my obsession with all things 60s. last night, marked the end of an era, the end of me lying on my couch on sunday nights saying,"don. stop. don i hate you. no don. oh don. i love you don draper.", and the end of some of the most beautifully written lines and scenes in television history. the end, until i decide to watch all of mad men all over again on netflix at 2 am.

i could probably write for hours about how joan harris is the ultimate woman and kind of my fictional character role model, how stan rizzo is my fashion icon and i could write an entire book on how i would like to strangle don draper and give him a hug all at the same time, so i'll just keep it to my most favorite lines in the beautiful, tragic, soul and time sucking emotional roller coaster thing that mad men is.

gracie's most favorite mad men lines...

"that's life. one minute you're on top of the world, the next minute, some secretary's running you over with a lawn mower." -joan holloway harris

"when a man walks into a room, he brings his whole life with him. he has a million reasons for being anywhere, just ask him. if you listen, he'll tell you how he got there. how he forgot where he was going, and that he woke up. if you listen, he'll tell you about the time he thought he was an angel or dreamt of being perfect. and then he'll smile with wisdom, content that he realized the world isn't perfect. we're flawed, because we want so much more. we're ruined, because we get these things, and wish for what we had."-don draper (this one's my most, most favorite by the way)

"remember don... when god closes a door, he opens a dress." -roger sterling

"you want to be taken seriously? stop dressing like a little girl."- joan holloway harris

"what you call 'love' was invented by guys like me to sell nylons."-don draper

"this isn't china. there's no money in virginity."-joan holloway harris

"if you don't like what's being said, change the conversation."-don draper

"you know what my father used to say? being with a client is like being in a marriage. sometimes you get into it for the wrong reasons, and eventually they hit you in the face."-roger sterling

"i'm peggy olson and i want to smoke some marijuana."-peggy olson

"well, i gotta go learn a bunch of people's names before i fire them."-roger sterling

"i'm not a solution to your problem. i'm another problem."-joan holloway harris
